What Is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a digital permission to travel, not a traditional visa. It’s intended primarily for eligible travellers who can visit the United Kingdom without obtaining a visitor visa in advance.
Once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to the passport used in the application. You normally travel using that same passport rather than presenting a separate paper document.
The UK government currently allows eligible ETA holders to travel for purposes including tourism, visiting family or friends, business trips and short-term study. An ETA may also be used for qualifying medical visits, permitted paid engagements, certain Creative Worker activities and landside transit where the relevant visitor conditions are met.

Do children and babies need their own UK ETA?
Yes. Every traveller who needs an ETA must have an individual authorisation, including babies and children.
A parent or legal guardian can complete an application for a minor. Each child's ETA is linked to the passport used for that child's application.
Do you need a UK ETA for transit or Northern Ireland?
A UK ETA may be required when you transit through a UK airport and pass through UK border control.
If you remain airside and do not pass through border control, you don’t currently need an ETA solely for that transit. Your airline can confirm whether your connection requires you to cross the UK border.
The ETA system applies to travel to the United Kingdom, including England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
