Multiple Immigration Form (FMM)
Enter Mexico by land
The Mexico FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) is required for foreign travelers entering Mexico by land. Skip long lines, apply online now.
Complete Mexico FMMWhat Is the Mexico FMM and What Is It For?
The Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) records your immigration status as a visitor in Mexico. It’s a separate requirement from your passport and visa (if needed).
If you’re entering Mexico by land, the FMM must be completed and then validated by Mexican immigration authorities at the border. Here are the key details:
- The FMM is issued for a single entry.
- It can authorize a stay of up to 180 days, but immigration officers may authorize a shorter stay depending on your trip.
- It’s only valid for tourism, business, and other unpaid activities. To do paid activities or work in Mexico, you need a different type of permit.
Completing the form online doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be granted admission to Mexico. The final entry decision and authorized period of stay are determined by the immigration officer.

Who Needs a Mexico FMM?
Whether you need to complete an FMM before travel depends on how you enter Mexico.
Entering Mexico by land
All foreign visitors entering Mexico by land generally need to complete the FMM immigration process. This includes travelers crossing the border:
- On foot
- By car
- By bus
- Through an eligible pedestrian border crossing
- Through Cross Border Xpress (CBX) when crossing into Mexico from the U.S.
You can prepare the electronic FMM before your trip and take the required document to your selected border crossing. There, the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) will validate it.
Entering Mexico by air
If you’re flying into Mexico, you don’t need to complete the land FMM before departure.
Mexico has replaced the traditional physical FMM at international airports with a digital immigration record.
On arrival, immigration authorities process your entry, stamp your passport or record your admission electronically, and generate the Forma Migratoria Múltiple Digital (FMMd) if needed. You’re not required to fill out an FMM form in advance.
Arriving on a cruise
Most cruise passengers don’t need an individual FMM if they leave the ship in Mexico and continue their journey on the same cruise.
If you disembark in Mexico and then continue your journey on the same cruise ship, you’re generally covered under a collective immigration permit rather than needing to arrange your own FMM.
Requirements may differ if you leave your cruise permanently in Mexico or continue your trip independently, so check the immigration requirements for your specific itinerary with your tour operator.
Do children need their own FMM?
Yes. Children need their own FMM when one is required for the trip. Mexican authorities don’t offer a family FMM that covers multiple travelers.
Parents or legal guardians should complete the form for children and minors. Children under 2 may be exempt from the immigration fee, but they may still need their own FMM. You can submit multiple applications with HandleVisa for your entire travel party.
Mexico FMM Requirements
Have the following travel and ID details ready before starting your application:
- Valid passport: Use the passport or travel document you’ll present at the Mexican border. Enter all details exactly as shown on your passport. You’re recommended to have at least 6 months of validity remaining.
- Travel itinerary: Provide your entry and departure dates and the exact land border crossing you plan to use. Your electronic FMM is linked to the entry point selected in your application
- Accommodation in Mexico: Enter the full name and physical address of your hotel, rental, host, or private residence. Incomplete or incorrect address details can cause avoidable application issues, so make sure to add all the required details.
- Active email address: Use an email account you can access before and during your trip. We’ll send your application updates and travel documentation there.

How Does the Mexico FMM Online Application Work?
Important: Even once approved and issued, your land FMM must still be presented to Mexican immigration at your selected border crossing. The immigration officer validates your entry and confirms how long you may stay.
FAQs About the Mexico Forma Migratoria Múltiple
How much does the Mexico FMM cost?
Toggle faqs
For stays of more than 7 days, the 2026 Mexican government immigration fee is MXN 983 (approximately US$55). For 7 days or less, the government fee doesn’t apply.
HandleVisa charges a separate service fee for our simplified application, expert review, processing support, and customer assistance. Your total applicable cost is shown before payment.
Can I extend my FMM if I decide to stay longer in Mexico?
Toggle faqs
The FMM can authorize a stay of up to 180 days, but you must leave Mexico before the period actually granted to you expires.
If you need to stay longer or your travel plans change, contact Mexican immigration authorities before your authorized stay expires to determine what options apply to your circumstances.
What should I do if I lose or damage my printed FMM?
Toggle faqs
If you lose, damage, or destroy a validated FMM while you are in Mexico, you may need to request an official replacement through the Instituto Nacional de Migración (Mexico’s National Immigration Institute) and pay the applicable replacement charge.
Keeping the document sent to you by HandleVisa in your email gives you a useful digital backup of your original application documentation, which you can access again if necessary.
However, reprinting a pre-travel copy does not automatically replace an FMM that has already been validated or stamped by immigration. If you have already crossed the border, you should follow the INM replacement procedure.
Do I need an FMM if I enter Mexico using Cross Border Xpress (CBX)?
Toggle faqs
Yes. Foreign travelers entering Mexico through CBX usually need an FMM. CBX is treated as a land border crossing, even if you’re taking a flight from Tijuana afterward.
CBX is considered a land border crossing because you physically walk across the U.S.–Mexico border through the pedestrian bridge before entering Tijuana Airport. You are therefore entering Mexico by land first, even though you may board a flight immediately afterward.
Can I use the same FMM for several trips to Mexico?
Toggle faqs
No. A standard FMM is for one entry into Mexico.
Once you leave Mexico, that immigration record is completed. If you return on a later trip and an FMM is required for your new route of entry, you will need to complete the immigration process again.
